Tahoma was designed by Matthew Carter for Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft first made it the default font with its initial release of Windows 95. Many have compared Tahoma with Fruiter which is another Humanist sans serif font; Carter admitted in an interview with Daniel Will-Harris that Tahoma shares some similarities with Bell Centennial typeface as well.
Tahoma font was officially included with Microsoft Office 97, Office 2000 and XP; and was available free-of-charge via Word Viewer 97. Tahoma quickly became the dominant screen font used on Windows 2000/XP/2003 (replacing MS Sans Serif) while also appearing in Skype conversations and Sega Dreamcast packaging and promotional materials; its library became part of Windows libraries of fonts as it gradually replaced Arial with Tahoma font.
