Palatino was initially released by Stempel Foundry in 1949 before later becoming available through other companies such as Mergenthaler Linotype Company. Designed by Hermann Zapf, this old-style serif font was popular with users.
Palatino was named in honor of Giambattista Palatino (16th-century Italian calligrapher). This style is inspired by humanist types prevalent during Italy’s Renaissance era. Letters are formed using a broad nib pen to showcase Zapf’s expertise as a calligrapher; capital “Y” features an unusual “palm Y”, inspired by Greek letter upsilon; this characteristic can be found among earlier variations such as those created by Aldus Manutius.
