Modak is a Free and Open Source, Heavy-Chubby Devanagari-Latin display typeface. The design was inspired by a heavy hand sketched letterform look we explored on a previous project. The characters were reminiscent of that font but were made heavier and chubby.
The speciality of this font is the overlap of matras and Rozar, rather than making it a successive of the first character. Conjuncts were drawn as fused characters in which two characters would merge into each other. All the characters had fill from rounded edges, and our biggest challenge was to maintain the consistency of thin, white counter, irrespective of their structural complexity and the level of amalgamation.
Eight Matras were designed and mapped to set after all primary designs were made. The intent was to make new matra only 60-70% covering so that the reading of the character form remains uninterrupted. To make it functional, few matras where the reading became impossible due to the shapes rotated to some angle. Ukars were made accordingly.
