Berthold first released Akzidenz Grotesk under its original title of Accidenz in 1898, inspired by Theinhardt Foundry’s Ferdinand Royal Grotesk Light design for royalty type cutter. Later on, Theinhardt Foundry collaborated with Berthold in creating regular, medium, and strong sizes of Akzidenz-Grotesk font.
Gunter Gerhard Lange, Berthold’s director of art in the 1950s, initiated an initiative to broaden its character set while keeping its original features from 1898 intact. Under Guntergerhard Lange’s guidance, Berthold expanded with AG Medium Italic released in 1963; AG ExtraBold Extrabol in 1966; AG Italic between 1967-1968 and ExtraBold as an abbreviated version of Italic Super Italic Super.
