The Charles Bluemlein Script Collection harkens back to the heady days of hand lettering and calligraphy in the United States. Thousands of hand letterers were employed in advertising in the United States; in New York alone, there were 200 professional hand letterers at work in the years between the early 1930s and World War II. Photo lettering killed this occupation, leaving it for dead, and when digital typography arrived it was supposed dead. The curious mixing and matching that took place on this “Bluemlein” was a calligraphic adventure.
