Gotham Font is an iconic geometric sans serif typeface created by American designer Tobias Frere Jones in 2000 and widely utilized throughout New York City. Inspired by architectural signs popular during the mid 20th century period, Gotham’s letterforms can be found all around New York.

Montserrat

The old posters and signs in the traditional Montserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires inspired Julieta Ulanovsky to design this typeface and rescue the beauty of urban typography that emerged in the first half of the twentieth century. As urban development changes that place, it will never return to its original form and loses forever the designs that are so special and unique. The letters that inspired this project have work, dedication, care, color, contrast, light and life, day and night! These are the types that make the city look so beautiful. The Montserrat Project began with the idea to rescue what is in Montserrat and set it free under a libre license, the SIL Open Font License.

This is the normal family, and it has two sister families so far, Alternates and Subrayada. Many of the letterforms are special in the Alternates family, while ‘Subrayada’ means ‘Underlined’ in Spanish and celebrates a special style of underline that is integrated into the letterforms found in the Montserrat neighborhood.

Nexa

Nexa Light, and Nexa Bold, are both available to download for free. They are a little more expressive than some of the typefaces in this list, notably the lowercase g and the uppercase J and Q. Much of the basic form is inspired by Gotham, and Nexa is great for branding projects.

The completely refined family design comes with an addition of one more weight—Extra Light—and its matching italic, alongside an entirely new subfamily—Nexa Text, optimized for longer text, and even a futurist stylistic set of Nexa for an alternative display look. Kiona is a minimal geometric uppercase typeface that feels similar to Gotham in many of its characters. But Kiona emphasises the diagonal in its distinct K, and R. Kiona light, bold, and semibold are all premium fonts. Kiona regular is free to download.

Coves is a simple geometric sans-serif that shares much of its DNA with Gotham, the apex on the M, the lack of cross-bar on the J, the shape of the double-height a, all follow the same pattern. It’s free for personal use, but for commercial use you’ll need a license.
