Lucida Console Font was first released by Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes in 1984 as an extended family of typefaces designed to be legible even at smaller sizes and low resolutions, hence their Latin root word of Lucid (meaning clear or easy to comprehend).
Lucida font is available in numerous variations that span serif (Fax, Bright) as well as sans-serif fonts such as (Sans Unicode Grande Sans Typewriter Sans) and script fonts (Blackletter Calligraphy Handwriting). Some programs, including Microsoft Office include Lucida font options.
Bigelow & Holmes and (now defunct) TeX vendor Y&Y joined forces to add Lucida as one of only a handful of fonts capable of fully featured text and mathematical typesetting inside TeX. Lucida fonts can be licensed commercially from both TUG Store as well as their website store; updates occur regularly for these fonts.
