Bembo was designed through the British Monotype Corporation department in 1928-9 and widely used for body text; its roman style (commonly referred to as normal style) first originated with Francesco Griffo at Venetian printer Aldus Manutius’ printer Aldus Manutius’ printing press Aldus Manutius 1495 under Francesco Griffo’s direction (known later as Aldine Roman). Bembo was named in honor of Manutius when published for use in 1496 book written by poet and cleric Pietro Bembo himself who created and named this typeface just on his name alone!
Bembo established Monotype at a time when Italian Renaissance printing was being revived under the leadership of Stanley Morison, Director of Printing History and General Manager at Monotype; after another revival focused on Manutius known as Poliphilus.
