Morris Fuller Benton created News Gothic for American Type Founders in 1908. The initial design featured two condensed faces that resembled Franklin Gothic; its popularity later declined with the rise of sans serif fonts like Gill Sans, Futura and Kabel; but later came back into fashion during World War II as American gothic typefaces saw renewed use in Europe.
At this time, more variants of News Gothic were developed, including News Gothic Bold which Intertype introduced in 1955. Like Franklin Gothic, these typefaces remain classics used widely across newspapers packaging advertising and headlines.
