Playfair Display is an aesthetic transition. In Europe’s Enlightenment period of the 18th century, pointed metal pens gave way to broad quills with nibs as the most frequently used instrument for writing. Furthermore, advances in printing technology enabled sharp contrast printing that distinguished between composed letterforms and those created through playfair letters.
The style is appropriate to its time. While not reviving old methods of writing or layouts such as those by John Baskerville or “Scotch Roman”, it was inspired by them for body text illustrations in Georgia.
