Playfair can be considered a transitional style. During the European Enlightenment in the 18th century, broad-nibbed quills became less commonly used than pointed steel pens when making instruments from this period. As printing technology and ink production processes advanced further, Playfair style letterforms with large contrast as well as delicate hairlines became easier than ever to print with greater clarity than ever before.
The structure is perfectly suitable to its period; while not an exact replica, its style owes something to John Baskerville’s “Scottish Roman” styles as well as those of Ga.It could even serve well as part of system text.
