Trade Gothic was designed by Jackson Burke (1908-1975) around 1948 as a sans-serif typeface. Working as director of development for type at Linotype in the USA during that time period, Burke made further variations to style and weight combinations (which numbered 14 altogether) until 1960 when Linotype took on this project in their USA headquarters. Today the family includes three different weights of Trade Gothic as well as three wides.
As is often the case for Gothic fonts of the 19th and early 20th century, Trade Gothic stands out as being more distinct than modern sans-serif fonts such as Helvetica or Univers. Designers appreciate its distinctive qualities for creating distinctive effects in designs.
