Verdana is a modernist sans serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter for Microsoft Corporation and hand-hinted by Thomas Rickner of Monotype, with Virginia Howlett from their typography group notifying Steve Ballmer about its need. Ballmer gave it its current name “Verdana”, which is derived from “verdant”, something green, and Ana (the initials of Howlett’s daughter).
Verdana shares many similarities with humanist sans serif fonts like Frutiger; it was designed for use at small sizes on low-resolution screens on computers of its era. Like other designs of this style, Verdana boasts a large size x-height (tall lowercase character) as well as wider proportions and less letter spacing than printed designs such as Helvetica.
Apertures and counters are wide to keep strokes free from one another and to make the letters that share similar shapes appear distinct, improving legibility of body text. Carter worked mainly on spacing when creating this font to accommodate for display limitations on screen devices; boldweight is greater than is normal for printing fonts due to limited space available on screen devices.
