Linotype GmbH first released Avenir Next by Adrian Frutiger and released it commercially in 1988 under its Linotype trademark. Avenir’s name derives from French for future and refers to how its design draws inspiration from geometric sans serif typefaces created during the 1920s; examples being Erbar and Futura.
Frutiger is considered Avenir Next as it offers a natural and organic representation of geometric designs with uniform colors for longer texts. Its characteristics evoke more popular typefaces such as two-storey letters such as ‘a and t’ as well as its characteristic “t”, with its upward slope towards its base, among others. Furthermore, there are letters such as the o which don’t quite form perfect circles but instead feature optical correction to their designs.
