Optima Italic was designed by Hermann Zapf and first produced for publication by D. Stempel AG foundry of Frankfurt, Germany in 1958.
Although Optima is technically classified as sans serif font, its terminal heights slightly increase to hint at serif glyphs. Inspired by classical Roman capitals as well as Renaissance tombstones seen by Zapf on his 1950 trip to Italy, this font was designed using geometric forms reminiscent of serif fonts.
Zapf designed Optima as an all-purpose typeface suitable for both body text and titling applications, demonstrating its versatility by setting his entire book About Alphabets using it 2. He retained an interest in working on variations and expansions during his eighties despite having developed other projects simultaneously.
