The first Sans Serif Racing Sans fonts to include lowercase letters were made around 1800 (100 years before Helvetica and Univers) and they were very High Contrast at the time. Again this may have been because they were derived from traditional serif typefaces of their day.
But for the same reason as above, when fashion evolved in a new form monoline Sans fonts were born without much difference between thick and thin lines to begin with. This kind of contrasted modern day Cong Li is very scarce–and only a few types are successful.
Looking through old specimens, we dug up three that leaped out at us immediately: Doric Italic and Taylor Gothic from American Type Founders (1897), and Charter Oak from Keystone Type Foundry of Philadelphia (1906). Racing Sans is a modern high contrast sans, dedicated to this abandoned genre.
