Louis Chevrolet was an extremely successful Swiss driver who is remembered today by the name on its automobiles. Born in France in 1878, he worked at Morse until moving with brothers Arthur and Gaston to Canada as part of their families; upon moving back into the U.S. in New York City Louis started repairing vehicles as well as trucks produced at William Walter Manufacturing Plants.
He went on to work in several factories where his skill as one of the top drivers earned him recognition from William C. Durant, creator of General Motors. Durant eventually hired him for this purpose as General Motors’ driver.
Louis Chevrolet and William Durant collaborated to design a car modeled on French automobiles; it was eventually named Chevrolet. A traditional six-cylinder model made its debut into American markets during 1911.
