Courier is an unispaced slab serif typeface designed by Howard “Bud” Kettler (1919-1999). Initially intended for IBM typewriters, its purpose has since expanded into computers; versions can now be found on most desktop PCs and laptops worldwide. Unfortunately BM did not trademark Courier so its design and name have become part of public domain.
According to certain sources, an earlier version of IBM’s Selectric typewriters may have been designed with input from Adrian Frutiger; however, Paul Shaw believes this may have been misinterpreted from Frutiger’s version of Univers typeface and applied directly onto Selectric system; there remains some debate as to when exactly this typeface was released into service – 1955 or 1956 are often quoted.
